This coming Thursday, Sept. 18th between 2 and 4 pm, Member Phil Crane will lead a walk to the Bowen Memorial in the Yale Forest in Belmont / Mount Holly. It is a relatively short walk -- 1¼ miles round trip, along a very rough road with some stones and larger boulders exposed by erosion. There's a little elevation gain but nothing steep. Solid walking or hiking shoes and hiking poles are recommended.

Rain date (don't we wish we had some rain in the forecast!) is the following day, Sept. 19th. Backup will the Thursday and Friday the following week.

Please register to indicate your interest in joining us!

Directions to the meeting place:

Heading south on Route 103, turn right onto Belmont Road at the blinking light. Two plus miles up the road you'll see a road to the left, Lake Street. Take that and almost immediately merge onto Healdville Road. Follow that for about 2 miles until a road breaks off to the right at a big bend in the road.  This is Hedgehog Hill Road and you will follow it until it turns into Yale Road, which in a mile or so becomes unpassable by ordinary vehicles. Pull onto the grassy area for parking.

More information about the hike from Phil follows.

Walk to the Bowen Memorial in the Yale Forest

The Yale Forest in Mount Holly lies on either side of Yale Road. This large parcel of
land was a gift to the Yale University Department of Forestry by the Bowen
family in memory of their son, a World War 1 aviator, who died in combat. As part
of the gift, the family established a memorial to their son, Our goal will be this
memorial on a large exposed stone about 100 yards off of Yale road in an area
where there were several houses probably dating from the early to mid
nineteenth century.
This is a relatively short walk ( about 1.25 miles round trip) along Yale road
starting from a small grassy parking area where the road conditions deteriorate
so that ordinary vehicles would not be comfortable going. This grassy parking is
reached by continuing along Hedgehog Hill Road South which basically turns into
Yale Road.
Since the road would be difficult for some vehicles, the footing is also not always
easy because of stones and some eroded areas and a few large boulders
exposed by the erosion. Good walking shoes and walking poles are advised.
There is a little change in elevation but no steep parts.
